SKIN BIOPSY

There are several causes for rashes and skin lesions.  Unfortunately, physical examination and allergy testing don’t always reveal the cause of the rash.  If indicated by the Physician, a skin biopsy helps in making the diagnosis of the skin condition. Physicians at the Arizona Asthma and Allergy Institute are trained in performing skin biopsies to diagnose skin conditions.

REASONS FOR A SKIN BIOPSY

Skin biopsies are useful in diagnosing allergic reactions and drug eruptions. After the biopsy, Physicians discuss personalized treatment options with patients.  There are a variety of treatment options, from avoidance of chemical triggers, to topical remedies or even nutritional advice.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

  • Allergic Contact Dermatitis is an allergic rash characterized by redness, itchiness and occasional blisters that occur anywhere on the body, from eyelids, to arms, legs and feet. Common culprits of the rash are cosmetics, sunscreens, soaps and detergents. A skin biopsy can help determine what is causing the dermatitis.

Drug Eruptions

  • Rashes and changes in skin are caused by a wide variety of mechanisms and reactions to drugs can be one of them. A skin biopsy can also help determine which drug reactions are causing the skin irritation.
